RUPERT EVERETT was born in 1959.
He got famous with his outstanding performance in the film,
ANOTHER COUNTRY. He was in Moscow when the
Soviet Empire collapsed. He was in Berlin the night the
wall came down. He was in downtown Manhattan on 9/11. He
seems to have met everyone.
RED CARPETS AND OTHER BANANA SKINS
is his autobiography. Everett brings as much energy and
talent to his life as he does to his acting career. He lived
in Paris with Beatrice Dalle. He modeled for Versace and
Valentino. He was possessed by the spirit of Anthony Perkins.
He played bridge with Christopher Isherwood. Everett knows
how to tell a good tale and is a keen observer of human
folly, especially his own. His is a charming account of
life lived in the fast lane.
RED CARPETS AND OTHER BANANA SKINS
is a hardcover from Warner Books. It includes black and
white and color photographs, $25.99

JAMES
IVORY IN CONVERSATION: HOW MERCHANT IVORY MAKES ITS MOVIES
is a collection of extended talks that Ivory had with ROBERT
EMMET LONG. These conservations cover Ivory's amazing career
from the docs in the 1950s through his grand and sweeping adaptations
of the novels of E.M. Forster and Henry James.
Kazuo Ishiguro said that "James Ivory is one of our greatest living
directors, and these pages, deliciously poised between diplomacy and
indiscretion, brim with his vast experience of every nook and cranny
of the film world...But perhaps most striking is the way this book illuminates
the human face of filmmaking, and becomes a touching testament to the
deep friendships--the bonds of trust, affection, professional respect--that
have made possible the unique triumph that is Merchant Ivory."
JAMES IVORY IN CONVERSATION is a trade paperback published
by the University of California Press. There are black and white photos
throughout, also an index, $14.95

EROTIKON:
ESSAYS ON EROS, ANCIENT AND MODERN is an collection by numerous
writers exploring the mysteries of eros. The writers aim to raise questions
about what, if anything, unites the erotic manifold. How is eros in
a sculpture like eros in a poem? Is the ancient story of Cupid and Psyche
still meaningful to modern readers? Is Plato's eros the same as Freud's.
How is Nietzsche's account of eros on the wane to be contrasted to Elizabeth
Costello's vision of a universe ruled by desire.Contributors include:
Peter Brooks, J.M. Coetzee, Catherine Edwards, Tom Gunning, David Halperin,
Susan Mitchell, Martha Nussbaum, Mark Strand, Richard Wollheim and others.
EROTIKON is a trade paperback from the University of Chicago
Press. It includes a bibliography and an index, $22.50

THIRST
is a collection of forty-three new poems by Pulitzer Prize-winner
MARY OLIVER. She introduces two new directions in this work. Grappling
with grief after the death of her beloved partner of over forty years,
she strives to experience sorrow as a path to spiritual progress, grief
as part of loving and not its end.Within these poems, Oliver also
chronicles for the first time her discovery of faith, without abandoning
the love of the physical world that has been a hallmark of her work
for four decades. In three stunning long poems, Oliver explores the
dimensions and tests the parameters of religious doctrine.

MATT HOULBROOK is the author of QUEER
LONDON: PERILS AND PLEASURES
IN THE SEXUAL METROPOLIS 1918-1957. He begins his narration with
an incident from 1934. A young man, Cyril L., writes his friend about
the exciting gay scene in London. Soon he would be arrested for simply
being in a gay club.
Drawing on previously unused sources, including police reports, newspaper
exposés, personal letters and diaries and
the first gay guide book ever written, Houlbrook explores the relationship
between queer sexualities and modern urban culture that we take for
granted today. He revisits London's parks and streets, restaurants,
pubs, dancehalls, Turkish baths and hotels. He documents the various
police crackdowns on these venues. Houlbrook's is a sustained challenge
to conventional assumptions of the city as a place of sexual liberation
and a unified queer culture.
QUEER LONDON is new in trade paperback from the University
of Chicago Press. It includes black and white photographs, notes, a
bibliography and an index, $20.00

Jacqueline
Bouvier Kennedy Onassis was a woman who once noted that "I want to live
my life, not record it." Too bad she didn't leave a diary or a journal.
One wonders: if her letters were ever published, would they be interesting
(as are the recently published letters of Jessica Mitford, DECCA)?
RUTH FRANCISCO has written a novel; it is THE SECRET MEMOIRS
OF JACQUELINE KENNEDY ONASSIS. She wants to fill in the blanks.
What did JBKO think about Jack's constant womanizing (I've always thought
womanizing an odd word; is there a comparable word "manizing")? Why
did she marry Onassis? How did she handle life after the assassination
and raising two children as a single Mom while in the media's glare?
Francisco tells JBKO's story in a voice she adopts as Jackie's own,
reimagining her thoughts and feelings still in the recess of recorded
history.
THE SECRET LIFE OF JACQUELINE KENNEDY ONASSIS is a trade paperback
from St. Martin's Griffin, $13.95
