TERENCE KISSACK is the author of FREE COMRADES: ANARCHISM
AND HOMOSEXUALITY IN THE UNITED STATES, 1895-1917.
Kissack examined public records, journals and books published between
1895 and 1917. His result deepens the reach of GLBT studies in the United
States. Emma Goldman, Benjamin Tucker, Alexander Berkman are among the
anarchists he writes about. These three were among the prominent ones
who defended same-sex relations, and they often found themselves challenging
the sexually conservative beliefs of their fellow anarchists, as well
as those outside the movement--the police, clergy and medics--who condemned
the same-sexers.
Kissack takes a new look at the trial and imprisonment of Oscar Wilde,
the life and work of Walt Whitman, the contents of periodicals such
as Tucker's LIBERTY and Leonard Abbott's THE FREE COMRADE, as well as
the frank treatment of homosexual relations in Berkman's PRISON MEMOIRS
OF AN ANARCHIST. Over a hundred years ago, this small group of anarchists
was way ahead of where public opinion in the USA is today.
FREE COMRADES is a trade paperback from AK Press. There are
a few photos and illustrations throughout the text. It also includes
notes, a bibliography and an index, $17.95

CLAUDE
CAHUN (1894-1954) was born Lucy Schwob. She was known as a poet,
performer, resistance fighter, prisoner, Surrealist, photographer and
"queer freak." Clearly a piece of business. She was constantly reinventing
her life by flaunting the interchangeability of roles and playing with
the ambivalence of identity. She feigned vulnerability on the arm of
her lover and stepsister, Suzanne Malherbe (aka Marcel Moore); she made
theatrical public appearances in costume (sailor, gymnast, gypsy); she
assumed poses (vampire, Buddha, mannequin, angel) for self-portraits
and installations. In May, 1930, 500 copies of her book, Aveux
non Avenus, was published in Paris. In her book, Cahun explored
her artistic pursuits in book form, a kind of anti-memoir. DISAVOWALS
is the first appearance of Cahun's 1930 book in English.
DISAVOWALS is a trade paperback from The MIT Press. There
are a few illustrations included with the text, plus notes, $40.00

JOSEPH
OLSHAN is the award-winning author of eight novels. His first,
CLARA'S HEART, was developed into a film starring Whoopi Goldberg.
His latest is THE CONVERSION. We find Russell Todaro, a young
American translator, in Paris with his older companion, a famous poet
named Edward Cannon. One night, two bandits break into their hotel room
and terrorize them. The intruders do not find what they are looking
for and quickly depart. Cannon is so traumatized by the event that he
dies in his sleep later that night.
Marina Vezzoli, an Italian writer, hears of these events and invites
Russell to recuperate at her villa in Tuscany. Russell lingers in Italy
and comes to see that the people in his life are using him or manipulating
him and at the top of the list are the New York publishers who, against
Cannon's wishes, are attempting to acquire the dead poet's unfinished
manuscript. Russell also becomes fascinated with the legacy of Villa
Guidi. During WWII, a Jewish family hid in the lower levels, later undergoing
a conversion to Catholicism. Russell, too, finds himself undergoing
a different kind of conversion in order to find redemption and greater
meaning in his life.
THE CONVERSION is a hardcover from St. Martin's Press,

AUGUSTEN
BURROUGHS has taken the occasion in his new book, A WOLF AT THE
TABLE, to revisit his memories of his family when he was young.
Memories can be tricky things, particularly memories of youth. A
WOLF AT THE TABLE is his meditation about his father.
Burroughs
recalls his father as a shadowy presence--a form on the stairs, a cough
in the basement, a silent figure smoking a cigarette in the dark. As
Burroughs grew older, he saw more clearly his father's sinister side.
There was something brooding and secretive about the man that Burroughs
could not source or name.
Burroughs read his father's actions and inactions as betrayal after
betrayal. The kind of father he wanted didn't exist in the man. And
then the "games" began. This is a memoir of stunning psychological cruelty
and the redemptive power of hope.
A WOLF AT THE TABLE is a hardcover from St. Martin's Press,
$24.95

When
JOEL DERFNER was six and attending summer day camp, he tried
to sign up for courses in needlepoint and flower arranging. The camp
counselors wouldn't let him; boys had to do other things. This was not
a good idea. From that moment, as Derfner recalls in his amusing book
SWISH, he set out to be the gayest person ever, no small
ambition given the competition.Along the way, he has become a fierce
knitter, and even fiercer musical theatre composer and a driven step
aerobics instructor. SWISH is written with a sly humor and keen
insights into the parameters of gender identity. At once a hilarious
look at contemporary ideas about gay culture, it is also a poignant
exploration of social/sexual constructs.
SWISH: MY QUEST TO BECOME THE GAYEST PERSON EVER is a hardcover
from Broadway Books, $23.95

TERRANCE
DEAN spent ten years working his way up in the entertainment industry,
from intern to executive. In his new book, HIDING IN HIP HOP,
Dean reveals that within the masculine cultures of Hollywood and Hip
Hop, there is an extensive gay subculture that most everybody knows
about but industry bigwigs choose to hide.
Dean lived the life of glitz and bling along with
MovieLand and Hip Hop's most glamorous. He has a catalogue of many of
the secrets from those worlds, situations where a talent's job prospects,
friendships and reputation all depend on remaining on the down low and
in hiding. Dean's book is a revealing account of the journey of coming
out of hiding.
Full of titillating anecdotes and beyond-belief
true stories, HIDING IN HIP HOP is something more than just a
show-biz tell-all. It is a personal and poignant memoir, a provocative
take on sexuality and the business of stardom.
HIDING IN HIP HOP is a hardcover from
Atria, $23.00
